While you’ve probably seen a hollowed-out pumpkin used as a vase for fall floral arrangements, have you ever considered using a butternut squash?

1. First, choose a squash with a flat bottom so it will stand upright.

2. Using a sharp kitchen knife (or the sawtooth carving knife from a carving kit), carefully cut off an inch or two from the top of the squash.

3. Use a spoon or pumpkin carving scoop to hollow out the center and create space for a vase to sit.

4. Nestle a vase inside, making sure it’s a snug fit.

5. Fill the vase with water and blooms, and enjoy.
