How to Practice Self-Care at Home

When life throws us a curveball, testing our resiliency, patience and ability to cope with stress, it’s very important to take care of ourselves. Self-care can help us emotionally, and practicing meditation and other relaxation techniques has even been shown to have a positive effect on physical health. Here are some suggestions to practice self-care at home:

  • Take a yoga break. You can find yoga classes of all levels available online. Try a few routines at home and see how you feel. Other deliberate movement practices, like tai chi, are also thought to have a positive effect both mentally and physically.
  • Practice mindfulness. There are many websites and YouTube videos that can lead you through mindful meditations, deep breathing exercises and other relaxation techniques. Try out one or two that seem interesting to you. You may be surprised by how much these small practices can benefit you.
  • Create a spa experience. Transform your bathroom into a spa and tell the family to keep out while you soak in a hot bath. If you have some on-hand, add scented mineral bath powders to the water; plain Epsom salts and a few drops of essential oils work, too. Light a candle. Play some soothing music. Breathe deeply.
  • Enjoy a guilt-free nap. Grab a snooze while the kids nap or enjoy a movie. It’s a great indulgence and a perfect restful escape to replenish you.
  • Get outside. Fresh air and Vitamin D-rich sunlight are good for the immune system. A short walk can work wonders to clear your mind and energize you. Just make sure to continue to use social distancing when you’re outside in public areas.
  • Stay connected. Use technology to check in on friends and relatives. If you can, use apps like FaceTime to chat via video to make your techno-connection deeper and richer.
